Stripes and Stars Over Tampa
May 13, 2011 - Volunteers of America of Florida held their 9th annual fund raising Gala called "Stripes and Stars Over Tampa” at the Renaissance Tampa International Plaza. The event was hosted by former Mayor Dick Greco. People from all over Florida were in attendance for an evening of fun, music, great food and some fantastic silent auction items.
The guest speakers for the evening were former Mayor of Tampa Dick Greco, Retired Brigadier General Arne Skjaerpe and Retired Staff Sergeant Luke Murphy.
One of the highlights of the evening was when Staff Sergeant Luke Murphy was presented the "Where Eagles Soar" award for his personal sacrifices and dedication to his country and others. As Murphy spoke to the crowd, it was very moving as he shared his experiences and philosophies. After all he had personally been through, being catastrophically wounded by an Improvised Explosive Device in Iraq and undergoing 27 surgeries, to still have a positive outlook on life was inspirational to all.
