Volunteers of America provides services and supports to people with a severe and persistent mental illness and/or suffer
from substance abuse.
Sometimes these individuals enter our services in nontraditional ways, perhaps through homelessness, substance abuse,
state hospitals or referrals from partner organizations. However a person comes to us, Volunteers of America focuses on
assisting those with serious and persistent mental illness to foster their capacity to live independently in stable, secure
and normalizing apartment environments in their communities.
In keeping with the tradition of our founders and our faith-based values, we believe that all individuals should be treated with
respect and dignity and receive the individualized supports they need to live independently in their community. Many program
participants served in these programs have had long periods of hospitalizations and yet have experienced successful community
living with the supports provided by Volunteers of America.
Each person has an individualized support plan, ultimately to become as self-sufficient as possible. Our supports range from
low-income housing options, counseling, assistance with medication management, money management and shopping,
transportation and assistance with personal care. Clinical staff, nurses, direct support professional, case managers and
others help to provide the level of support needed by each individual. Work training programs and employment assistance
with maintaining benefits are also options available to individuals in supportive living programs.
